Marriage License Information

To obtain a marriage license in Arizona, a couple must provide their names, ages, addresses, and Social Security numbers, and pay a license fee of $72.00. The couple may reside anywhere, but must get married in Arizona within a year after the license is granted. No blood test or waiting period is required.

Licensing Information

The minister or officiant is charged with the responsibility of sending in the signed marriage license after the ceremony. It usually takes at least two weeks from the day the clerk's office receives the license to get a certified copy. A certified copy of the license is required to change the name on the Social Security card and driver's license.

In some cases it is necessary to obtain the certified copy immediately after the ceremony. The minister or officiant can release the signed portion of the marriage license to the couple who can hand carry the document to the clerk's office and receive a certified copy that day usually within an hour.

In Maricopa County, the clerk's office is located at 201 West Jackson in Phoenix on the lower level. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Certified copies are $26.50 each and no discount is given for multiple copies.

According to the clerk's office the certified marriage license is needed to legally change names. The first document to change is the name on the Social Security card. 24 hours later, the driver's license can be changed by taking the form issued by the Social Security office with the certified copy of the marriage license to the Motor Vehicle Division to change the name on the driver's license.
